A business line of credit sets a borrowing limit that a business draws on as needed, paying interest only on the drawn balance, with the limit refilling as it is repaid. Cablecroft Capital Group, a small-business funding broker in Albany, Georgia, explains draws, draw periods and revolving versus non-revolving lines, and lending partners decide and price.

A draw, step by step
A draw is a transfer from the credit line into your business account, in whatever amount you need up to the available limit. Once drawn, that amount is a balance that accrues interest. Some lines allow draws online at any time; others require a request each time. The unused part of the limit costs nothing in interest, though some partners charge maintenance or unused-line fees.
Draw only what a specific bill needs, then pay it down when revenue arrives. A line kept fully drawn stops working as a cushion.
End of the draw window: renewal or repayment
The draw period is the window during which you may borrow against the line. When it ends, some lines renew after a review; others move into a repayment period where no new draws are allowed and the balance is paid off on a schedule. Ask how long the draw period lasts, what happens at the end, and whether the partner can reduce or freeze the limit in between.
Revolving or non-revolving?
A revolving line refills: repay a draw and that amount is available again. A non-revolving line lets you draw up to the limit, but repayments do not restore it; once the full amount has been used, the line is finished. Non-revolving lines behave more like a term loan taken in pieces, and can suit a project paid in stages.
How interest on a business credit line is charged
Interest is charged on the outstanding balance, usually calculated daily and billed monthly. The rate is often variable, tied to an index plus a margin set by the partner. A minimum monthly payment may cover only interest, or interest plus part of the principal. Read the terms for how the minimum is calculated and for any annual or draw fees, because those change the true cost.
Why small Albany, GA firms reach for a line
Dougherty County had 8,272 businesses with no paid employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024) and 2,220 employer establishments in 2023, almost half with fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). At that size, a single late payment or an unexpected repair can upset the month, which is exactly what a line is for.
An owner preparing to hire the first employee is a common case: wages start before the extra revenue does. From sole proprietor to first employee in Dougherty County works through that step. Figures on local firms give the wider picture.
Revolving line versus one lump sum
Use a line for repeating costs of uncertain size and timing: payroll swings, supplier orders, a repair. Use a term loan for one large cost with a long payoff. For a one-off, dated gap, working capital may be simpler. Stock bought ahead of sales can also go on a line secured by that stock, which is how many inventory financing arrangements work.
Habits that keep a credit line useful
- Draw for a named bill, not as a general top-up.
- Pay down each draw when the matching revenue lands.
- Track the balance weekly, not at statement time.
- Keep some of the limit unused for genuine surprises.
- Note the renewal or review date and have current statements ready for it.
A line that is used and repaid steadily tends to read better at review than one that sits fully drawn.
What partners weigh for a credit line
- Steady deposits across several months of statements.
- Credit reports for the business and, often, the owner.
- Existing debt and any advances being collected.
- Time in business.
- For secured lines, the receivables or inventory behind them.
A line may be reviewed each year, and the partner can change the limit. How a request travels explains the review.
